The Origin of Junior Football in Orange, Texas

The first Organized Junior football game played in Orange, Texas was in the fall of 1953.  It all started in Gilmer Homes (between 1st St. and 2nd St. and between W Pine Ave and W Cypress Ave.  The field is covered with apartments today).
There were a group of boys from Gilmer Holmes who were going to play a group of kids from Riverside.  Chachie Owens came over and asked Art McNabb if he would coach them.  (Videos of the first game are coming.) Bill Toohey and Pleas Evans also helped. The Gilmer Homes boys won the game.  The Riverside boys went back and got Gene (Tenay) Marks to coach them and the competition was on.  It took a while for the City of Orange to embrace the Junior Football competition but they finally did.  More on that later.  I hope you enjoy this.
